Tel Aviv — SURE Universal, creators of next-generation control solutions for home electronics and appliances, is extending its leadership in interoperable IoT control with powerful new solutions for set-top-box (STB) manufacturers.

At IBC 2017, held September 15-19 at the RAI Amsterdam Convention Center, the company will be showcasing its state-of-the-art software and hardware that immediately makes any STB into an interoperable, whole-home controller, utilizing existing standards and accessible off-the-shelf hardware.

“The set-top-box is the logical centerpiece of the consumer’s home experience, says SURE Universal Founder and CEO Viktor Ariel, “All operators, MSOs and Telcos now want and expect ‘smart’ capabilities from the STB. To live up to its full service and revenue potential, the STB not only needs to be smart, but also interoperable, and backward-compatible with the consumer’s existing electronics. SURE Universal now offers STB manufacturers a simple accessible solution that lets them meet these criteria, quickly and economically, using industry standards that work with all in-home devices; today’s, tomorrow’s and yesterday’s.”

The SURE Universal IoT control solution, already in use by more than 20 million consumers on their smartphone, is based on the Open Connectivity Foundation standard, which moves into mass production in October of this year. The SURE Universal control solution is the first and only OCF-Certified control solution, which ensures that STBs outfitted with the SURE Universal software will work interoperably across all cross-brand OCF devices.

Ready For Today’s STBs; Operates Tomorrow’s and Yesterday’s Gear

OCF is a new communication standard, backed by more than 400 leaders of the electronics industries. While it is destined to become mainstream technology in time, today’s consumers still use legacy equipment that works off a variety of control protocols and methods. For example, smart TVs often utilize Wi-Fi, while conventional TVs and disc players use infrared control. Smart home sensors often work through the popular Z-Wave protocol, and growing categories like smart light bulbs utilize Bluetooth. This technological confusion has made it difficult for STB makers and their operator customers to establish a market foot hold in the connected home.

SURE Universal solves this problem by offering a software gateway, available for integration into any Linux-based STB, with no hardware changes necessary. The gateway not only “speaks” directly to compliant devices, but also to a hub that can translate legacy electronics running older non-OCF protocols, such as Wi-Fi, Z-Wave and infrared control. In this way, the STB can seamlessly control all devices and appliances throughout the consumers’ home, and be brought to market by their makers with remarkable speed and economy.

“OCF compatibility represents a major shift in the smart home market,” says Ariel. “Before this broad compatibility, STB makers didn’t know which technologies to deploy on a practical level, which has hindered Telcos, MSOs and other service providers from expanding into profitable services. Sure Universal has the only control software certified under the OCF and the OCF has even licensed our software for its own internal testing. Our solution is market tested now, and ready for integration into STBs now, not years from now. What allows us to be future forward for STB makers is that our system can also control other legacy, non-IoT electronics throughout the house. STB manufacturers don’t have to wait for years for standards to become mainstream, and can be completely up-to-date technologically at very little cost in money and time.”

By providing a standardized client, gateway and cloud offering, SURE Universal offers a complete solution for whole-home/all-device control, inside the house and beyond, to STB makers and their service provider customers.
