MWC 2017: What to Look Out for at Mobile World Congress

With MWC 2017 right around the corner, it’s time to take a look at what big announcements are in store at Mobile World Congress this year.

If you’re anything like us here at Tekoia, you just love mobile technology.

There’s nothing more exciting than hearing rumors about the latest and greatest Samsung smartphone, or monitoring your favorite tech blogs for up-to-the-minute leaks and new gossip.

Now we need to keep our SURE Universal remote app compatible with any new devices, but even if you’re not that into mobile technology, you’ll still want to see what the 2017 Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona has in store this year.

There are big announcements coming from the likes of Samsung, BlackBerry, LG and Nokia – yes, Nokia.

Let’s see what there’s to look forward to during the week of February 27th to March the 2nd at the biggest tech event in Europe so far this year.

Samsung

With Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S7 arguably the best smartphone in the world, and the exploding Galaxy Note S7 possibly the worst, all eyes are on Samsung to see how they continue to innovate with the S8.

Unfortunately, Samsung has stated the Galaxy S8 won’t be unveiled at MWC, but the Korean Herald reports Samsung is releasing a short teaser the day before the event, on February 26th, at the Samsung Press Conference.

The Galaxy Tab S3 on the other hand, Samsung’s iPad Pro competitor, is likely to be announced. Expect more power, more RAM, and a similar display as the well-received Galaxy Tab S2.

Nokia

If you had a mobile phone in the early 2000’s, there’s a good chance it was a Nokia – more specifically, the original best-selling cell phone, the Nokia 3310.

Now run exclusively by HDM, Nokia is expected to announce something big at MWC this year. If leaks out of Russia are to be believed, Nokia is planning to reveal their most powerful smartphone yet, figured to be the flagship Nokia 8, powered by Android. This is big news for Nokia fans and even bigger news for Nokia if it hopes to recapture some of its former glory.

BlackBerry

While the BlackBerry brand may have lost some of its spark in the past few years, don’t be so quick to count them out. The brand hasn’t been forgotten, especially by business and enterprise customers, and a strong showing at MWC could help BlackBerry move back into the enterprise spotlight.

What’s being called the BlackBerry “Mercury” by fans on the internet – although not officially confirmed by BlackBerry – is expected to be revealed at MWC 2017.

Running a fairly vanilla version of Android Nougat and featuring a real, physical keyboard – something lacking on nearly all of today’s high-end smartphones – the BlackBerry “Mercury” with its built-in fingerprint sensor and emphasis on secure encryption could find a home in government and big business.

LG

While LG hasn’t come out and said it will launch the highly-anticipated G6 at their MWC press conference this year, it’s left a great big hint.

With the LG G6 display expected to have an aspect ratio of 18:9, and the February 26th “Save the date” invites featuring fireworks – and coming in an 18:9 aspect ratio – it doesn’t leave much to the imagination.

The G6 will run the latest Android Nougat, may feature the powerful Snapdragon 835 chipset, will likely be waterproof and has a rumored 5.7-inch display – in the aforementioned 18:9 aspect ratio. This will make for a phone that’s taller than average, but it can come in handy when working with split screens.

Sony, Motorola, Huawei, Smartwatches and More

Sony likes to showcase devices at big events like IFA of last year and now the MWC at Barcelona coming up. There are rumors that Sony will announce up to five new devices, including an update to their Xperia X family of smartphones.

Huawei, on the other hand, is expected to unveil a flagship device, as well as talk about the Huawei Watch 2 – a sporty-looking watch with cellular connectivity.

Which leads us to smartwatches. Companies like ZTE are likely going to use MWC as a springboard to launch their latest smartwatch, ZTE Quartz. And while Google released Android Wear 2.0 devices earlier in the month, we expect to see them mentioned at MWC as well

Wrapping It Up

With the 2017 MWC event promising many new flagship smartphones, and with the keynote being presented by Netflix’s Reed Hastings, we suspect mobile content will be a big focus this year. Tekoia will be right at the center of things at Hall 5, Stand 5E71, so be sure to stop by.

The current gen smartphones are going to be the most powerful ones yet, so to help you with consuming the latest digital content, and more, don’t forget to download the highest-rated universal remote app – our own SURE Universal Remote.

From controlling your TV, media streamers and air conditioners, to streaming content to your TV and from DLNA servers, to adjusting IoT smart home components like Philips Hue lighting and the Wulian iCam, the SURE Universal is constantly being updated and new device compatibility is being added all the time.

Over to you – what are you eagerly anticipating to come out of MWC 2017 in Barcelona this year?
