Sure, you have your favorite returning shows like The Walking Dead or Blindspot to look forward to, but maybe you’ve heard a lot about some new must-watch TV shows coming out this September. From small screen reboots to remakes of past TV hits to movie actresses playing a recurring role on TV, the shows this season are sure to impress. Make sure to grab your SURE Universal remote and check out these four highly anticipated shows for the fall of 2016.
1. The Exorcist (Fox)
Nods to the original film, The Exorcist, this new series stars Gina Davis and Alfonso Herrera. Davis plays Angela, the mom to a daughter who suddenly is becoming reclusive. Angela believes there’s a demon in her house and two priests – with very different approaches – try to help her and her family. The creators wanted to make sure to pay homage to the original Exorcist movie and plan to feature some iconic images and moments in the TV series. But, is this just a remake of the film? According to the producers, “It was important to let everyone know that this is a continuation of an existing story. So that was our little nod to say, ‘Don’t worry. The events of the movie, the events of the book still took place. We’re just telling a brand?new story with new characters 40 years later.'” The show premieres on September 23rd.
2. Kevin Can Wait (CBS)
For all you Kevin James fans out there, he’s back! After his run with the popular show King of Queens, he’s making headway on a new show, Kevin Can Wait. Kevin Can Wait is about Kevin, a newly retired cop looking forward to doing absolutely nothing! But, that doesn’t happen since the show also focuses on Kevin learning to accept his daughter’s quirky fiancé. This show isn’t a complete departure from King of Queens. James has stated that his previous co-stars Leah Remini and Jerry Stiller would absolutely make guest appearances on the new show, but not right away. Kevin Can Wait premieres on September 19th.
3. Lethal Weapon (Fox)
Fox is bringing back the legendary detective duos Martin Riggs – played by Clayne Crawford – and Roger Murtaugh – played by Damon Wayans – in Lethal Weapon. Riggs is an ex-Navy SEAL turned cop with some lethal skills up his sleeve while Murtaugh is a veteran LAPD detective with a desire to be safe. Both are partnered together for some hair-raising adventures. If you’re a fan of the movie, just note, this isn’t a remake with Danny Glover and Mel Gibson. While there are iconic moments in the TV show, the creators of Lethal Weapon want to have a new voice for the TV version. The show kicks off on September 21st.
4. MacGyver (CBS)
Diffuse a missile using only paperclips? Well, if you’re MacGyver, this is entirely possible, and more! Lucas Till stars as MacGyver and instead of packing guns, he’s packing chewing gum. This newest version is set earlier than the original TV show. This show rewinds to when secret agent MacGyver is in his 20’s and is only beginning his career as the government’s top-secret weapon. For the die-hard fans, the pilot will have a big Easter egg. Showrunner Peter Lenkov said, “If you watch the pilot, there is one very specific MacGyverism that we used. It’s really an Easter egg for people that know that original show. So I think they’ll recognize that particular little gag.” MacGyver premieres on September 23rd.
