Making Drivers’ Lives Easier
As the population is only getting larger, managing resources is becoming more and more important. Transporting a population of this size is considered to be one of the main challenges cities currently face. Luckily, parking is getting smarter thanks to IoT.
Imagine not having to drive around in circles looking for a parking spot. Sensors could be used to display whether a space is available or not. These sensors would send the data to the gateway in real-time, allowing a parking map to be updated continuously. Drivers could view the map using their mobile phones or car display so they know in advance if there are parking spaces available. It would also make it easier for law enforcement officers to find cars that are parked illegally.
We’ve all been there. You have every intention of getting back to the parking meter before it expires, but you miss it just by a little and find a fresh ticket waiting for you. Developers are working on a way to create mobile apps that notify you when your parking time is about to expire as well as provide a way to extend the time on the meter. Not only would this save drivers money on violations, but it would also help law enforcement as they lack the resources needed to monitor parking. Sometimes people park illegally in more critical locations such as handicap spots, bus stops or spaces reserved for parents picking up their children from school. If smart parking solutions were implemented, police officers could receive notifications of violations instantly as well as a priority level for each.
Innovative technologies are being released more and more frequently to help solve some of these problems. An Israeli company, Pango, created a mobile app with patented pay-by-phone technology to allow drivers to book and pay for on-street and parking garage spaces. Parko, another Israeli startup, has been taking advantage of all the data collected by Pango for their app. They use a combination of GPS and crowdsourcing to find spaces that are about to become available. While it may require an investment with respect to both time and money, smarter parking has the potential to not only make drivers’ lives easier but also reduce traffic and improve safety.
At SURE Universal, we have created a software defined IoT platform that also helps make our customers’ lives easier.
